Susan Glaspells Trifles and A Jury of Her Peers Essay -- Susan Glaspe
In the mid 1900's Susan Glaspell composed numerous works, two stick out, the play Wastes of time and the short story A Jury of Her Peers. Wastes of time was written in 1920, while A Jury of Her Peers was composed the next year. Wastes of time was written in just ten days. The genuine enormity of these works were not perceived until the 1970's. In the short story A Jury of Her Peers a lady named Minnie Wright is blamed for the homicide of her significant other. Minnie Wright is a rancher's significant other and is likewise disconnected from the outside world. There is an examination that happens in the home of the homicide. There are three men that are included working on it and two ladies go with, yet are not there to truly help settle the homicide. These two ladies will understand the murder and ensure Mrs. Wright of any bad behavior. The ladies will legitimize to themselves, that the homicide was reasonable. The three men search out to discover rationale, yet they never do and the case will go unsolved. Glaspell utilizes imagery as her an artistic gadget to light up her subject. The images include: a container of fruits, a feathered creature, a blanket, kitchen, an even the sort of bunch that was utilized for her blanket. These subtleties will enable the two ladies to legitimize the homicide of Mr. Wright. I wish to show how Glaspell utilizes imagery to legitimize the homicide. I additionally wish to show how an upset ranch womon will pull off homicide as a result of two farmwomen helping her, by disposing of important proof. In the short story A Jury of Her Peers Glaspell first uses the kitchen as her first utilization of imagery, to show disorder. As indicated by one pundit Kathleen WilsonThe kitchen is depicted as being in clutter with unwashed skillet under the sink, a dishtowel left on table, a portion of bread outside the breadbox, and other confusion. This gives the impression of no consideration having been paid to tidying up either as of late or as a rule (Wilson 3). The room has blurred backdrop, an old dark oven, and an old iron sink with a hand siphon and no blinds at the one window. The unpainted table at the middle sounds old and utilitarian. The portrayal proposes a uninviting room without any laces or anything to light up the territory. Not much or ladylike, similar to blossoms or bright plates are portrayed as being in the room. Presently these are subtleties that were thoroughly considered to help give the peruser more desire to locate their own explana... ...tchen, and the bunch that was utilized for her blanket. I am thoughtful to Minnie being mishandled by her significant other, however I despite everything believe that murder was not the solution to her issues. Works Cited Alkalay-Gut, Karen.' Government Free Essays
A governmentââ¬â¢s mediation in the economy of a nation, particularly in the United States has filled discussions and reactions, showcase disappointments, interruptions in the free-progression of market monetary exchanges among makers and shoppers. Be that as it may, its advantages far exceed the threats of disappointment in the monetary undertakings of the nation. It has been said that, ââ¬Å"Government intercession in the market decides to accomplish two objectives: social productivity and value. We will compose a custom exposition test on Government or on the other hand any comparable point just for you Request Now Social proficiency is accomplished at where the peripheral advantages to society for either creation or utilization are equivalent to the negligible expenses of either creation or utilization (Wikipedia.org, 2006).â⬠And it points additionally to achieve value as when the United States government started to practice its capacity to mediate so as to ensure independent companies and shoppers during the combination of United States ventures into incredible organizations. In giving an image of an economy under the system of government mediation as valuable, we should initially place as a top priority the monetary procedure where an administration intercession activity would be relevant. This is the image; ââ¬Å"Economic execution can be delineated through the ideas of total gracefully and total interest. Total gracefully is the all out flexibly of merchandise and enterprises created in the nationââ¬â¢s economy. It is upward-slanting in light of the fact that at more significant expenses firms have a motivating force to deliver more, and at lower costs they are probably going to create less. Total interest is the absolute interest for products and ventures in the nationââ¬â¢s economy. It is descending slanting in light of the fact that at more significant expenses, shoppers, firms, government, and outside clients are less ready to purchase, while they will probably purchase more at lower costs. Moves in the total flexibly and total interest bends can represent changes in the presentation of our economy. On the off chance that buyer trust in the economy falls and individuals decrease their spending, total interest can fall, diminishing genuine yield and costs and potentially dropping the nation into a downturn. In any case, if the cash flexibly is excessively enormous, over the top shopper request can push up the total interest, raising genuine yield and costs and perhaps driving the nation into genuine swelling (Econedlink.org, 2006). Essentially, the legislature mediates in a provided circumstance so as to address monetary issues, for example, genuine expansion, as was expressed in the former section, or upgrading the advantages and preferences to be gotten from the market with regards to economy. Presently, when expansion starts to show, some of the time the administration let it move in its normal course, yet on the off chance that the swelling rates go extremely, high to the disservice of the countryââ¬â¢s economy, the administration makes a move by making approaches to address these rates. What's more, presently, most financial experts took in their exercise from history the Great Depression during the early piece of the twentieth century. Indeed most business analysts attempt to advocate for that the administration ought to be increasingly forceful in making monetary balancing out approaches. One solid case of an administration intercession that positively affected the nation was the usage of President Franklin Delano Rooseveltââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"New Dealâ⬠approach which was a reaction to the Great Depression. During this period during the 1930s, (Economics.about.com, 2006) the United States persevered through the most exceedingly terrible business emergency and the most elevated pace of joblessness in its history. Numerous Americans reasoned that free private enterprise had fizzled. So they looked to government to ease hardships and diminish what had all the earmarks of being reckless rivalry. Roosevelt and the Congress instituted a large group of new laws that enabled government to intercede in the economy. In addition to other things, these laws controlled deals of stock, perceived the privilege of laborers to frame associations, set principles for wages and hours, if money advantages to the jobless and retirement pay for the older, set up ranch appropriations, guaranteed bank stores, and made an enormous local improvement expert in the Tennessee Valley. As a rule, in balancing out the economy, the administration utilizes fiscal approaches so as to direct flexibly and request, two factors in fundamental financial matters. A strategy like this is executed by ââ¬Å"influencing the national economy by financial control. Its component of fiscal control incorporates the meaning of the financial unit, the guideline of the flexibly of money and bank stores, and the control of banking (Greene, Parthemos. 78).â⬠Utilizing this fiscal control influence, it is suggested that the Federal Reserve System, being the establishment of the American Banking System, purchase securities with the goal that banks can have more cash by crediting. Thusly, this would assist with diminishing the loan fees; purchasers, makers and firms are bound to connect eagerly with one another in exchange through monetary exchanges. The legislature can likewise direct its consumptions to keep up its treasury saves so that in instances of financial challenges, it has intends to counterbalance the expanded in obligations. A circumstance in an economy where buyers and firms are dreadful of getting from banks, the administration can intercede by suggesting that the Federal Reserve Bank bring down the rebate and financing costs, with the goal that buyers and firms will be additionally ready to credit and spend in light of the fact that banks are eager to get cash accessible for advances at lower loan fees. This would effectuate an expanded in total interest. The points of the United States government, being an entrepreneur nation, regarding national economy are supposed to be to 1) secure a sufficient pace of development, 2) continue significant levels of creation and work, and 3) keep up sensibility in costs (Greene, Parthemos. 73). These goals would legitimize Americaââ¬â¢s execution of financial and monetary approaches in the midst of monetary disturbance. The Importance of Keeping it Simple Clear and Concise Writing
Be specific When I was a high school AP Biology student, my teacher used to walk by my desk during multiple choice exams and whisper, ââ¬Å"You didnââ¬â¢t really mean to circle B there, did you? Keep it simple.â⬠He knew I was an overthinker. Instead of circling the simplest and most obvious answerââ¬âwhich I often knew to be the right oneââ¬âI would overthink the question, until Iââ¬â¢d talked myself in to a trick wrong answer. Now an educator myself and a professional writer, I still tend to overthink, and also to overwrite. When this happens, I remember my Biology teacherââ¬â¢s advice. I think, what do I know to be true in this situation, once I eliminate all the analysis? What do I really want to say in this sentence, or in this essay, and what is the most clear and concise way to get that idea across? Keeping it simple helps me, and my students, to clarify our thoughts and our writing. Whether you are writing a personal essay for school or publication, or youââ¬â¢re writing a personal statement for college or graduate school admission, my best advice to you is to keep it clear and concise. But what does that look like in practice? Letââ¬â¢s take as example of introductory sentences for a medical school personal statement: When I think about why I want to be a doctor, I can think of many reasons. There are lots of things that have led me to realize that I have always wanted to enter the medical field and become a physician. What do we know from these two sentences? That the person has always wanted to be a doctor. But how many words did it take for the writer to get that point across? Too many. The first and second sentences are essentially saying the same thing, and can easily be condensed to, There are many reasons that I have always wanted to enter the medical field and become a physician. But even that sentence can be tightened, too. If the writer wants to become a physician, then they want to enter the medical field, so that clause can be deleted. Now weââ¬â¢ve cut two wordy sentences down to, There are many reasons I have always wanted to be a doctor. This new statement is clear and concise, but it doesnââ¬â¢t yet show us what the many reasons are. Instead of telling us that there are many reasons, the writer can simply show them. For example, they might say, Wrestling with a chronic illness, volunteering at a hospital, and conducting research in a lab have all helped me to identify the reasons I want to become a doctor. Here we have specific examples of experiences that have led the writer to the decision to apply to medical school. The sentence is leading us to a thesis that will presumably identify the reasons this person wants to become a doctor. That thesis can then lead to an essay that elaborates on these three specific experiences and the lessons learned from them. As you can see from this example, simplifying doesnââ¬â¢t mean dumbing down. It means getting to the heart of your essay in a specific yet clear and concise way. You want your reader to get to the heart of youââ¬âto get to know you through your words, to pull meaning from your experiences. To do that, here are some tips to keep in mind: Be specific To fill a page and try to sound good, writers often use lots of words that actually arenââ¬â¢t saying much at all. Are you fluffing your sentence up with big words but not giving specific examples that tell us about you? What details can you include that illustrate your thesis? That differentiate you from another writer or candidate? Use simple, clear language to show complex thoughts. Look for your thesis A thesis is a clear statement that outlines the main point of your essay. It should conclude your introductory paragraph, but is often hiding somewhere else in the essay. I have found thesis statements every where from the middle of the fourth paragraph to the middle of the conclusion. If the thesis is clearly stated at the end of the introduction, you have room to build up to it with a strong hook (stay tuned for another blog post about this!). Brainstorm before you write Ask yourself, what is the main point I want to get across in this essay? What details do I need to include to illustrate that point? Once you start writing, go through each sentence and ask yourself, am I stating this in the most clear, direct way possible? Avoid flowery language Readers can tell when youââ¬â¢ve used the thesaurus. You want your voice to sound authentic. Itââ¬â¢s more important to state your ideas clearly than it is to cloud them in big words. Use imagery and sensory details, of course. But use them naturally. Simply. Tighten, tighten, tighten! As Brad Pittââ¬â¢s Oceanââ¬â¢s 11 character Rusty says, ââ¬Å"Donââ¬â¢t use seven words when four will do.â⬠Go through every sentence with a fine-toothed comb. Can you make your verbs more active? Can you combine or condense sentences? Where can you cut words? Now where can you cut some more? When you have a character max for an essay, every word counts. Use them judiciously! How Did Crassus Die in the Battle of Carrhae
The death of Crassus (Marcus Licinius Crassus) is a classic Roman object lesson in greed. Crassus was a wealthy Roman businessman of the first century BCE, and one of the three Romans who made up the first Triumvirate, along with Pompey and Julius Caesar. His death was an ignominious failure, he and his son and most of his army slaughtered by the Parthians at the Battle of Carrhae. The cognomen Crassus means roughly stupid, greedy, and fat in Latin, and in the aftermath of his death, he was vilified as a stupid, greedy man whose fatal flaw led to public and private disaster. Plutarch describes him as an avaricious man, stating that Crassus and his men died as a result of his single-minded pursuit of wealth in central Asia. His folly not only killed his army but destroyed the triumvirate and demolished any hope of future diplomatic relations between Rome and Parthia. Leaving Rome In the mid-first century BCE, Crassus was the proconsul of Syria, and as a result, he had become enormously wealthy. According to several sources, in 53 BCE, Crassus proposed that he act as general to wage a military campaign against the Parthians (modern Turkey). He was sixty years old, and it had been 20 years since he had participated in a battle. There was no very good reason to attack the Parthians who had not attacked the Romans: Crassus was primarily interested in gaining the wealth of Parthia, and his colleagues in the Senate hated the idea. Efforts to stop Crassus included the formal announcement of bad omens by several tribunes, particularly C. Ateius Capito. Ateius went so far as to attempt to have Crassus arrested, but the other tribunes stopped him. Finally, Ateius stood at the gates of Rome and performed a ritual curse against Crassus. Crassus ignored all these warnings and set out on the campaign which was to end with the loss of his own life, as well as a large part of his army and his son Publius Crassus. Death in the Battle of Carrhae As he prepared to go to war against Parthia, Crassus turned down the offer of 40,000 men from the king of Armenia if he would cross the Armenian lands. Instead, Crassus chose to cross the Euphrates and travel overland to Carrhae (Harran in Turkey), on the advice of a treacherous Arab chief called Ariamnes. There he engaged in battle with the numerically inferior Parthians, and his infantry found they were no match for the barrage of arrows fired by the Parthians. Crassus ignored advice to reconsider his tactics, preferring to wait until the Parthians ran out of ammunition. That didnt happen, in part because his enemy used the Parthian shot tactic, of turning around in their saddles and firing arrows while riding away from the battle. Crassus men finally demanded that he negotiate an end to the battle with the Parthians, and he headed off to the meeting with the general Surena. The parley went awry, and Crassus and all of his officers were killed. Crassus died in a scuffle, possibly killed by Pomaxathres. Seven Roman eagles were also lost to the Parthians, a great humiliation to Rome, making this a defeat on the order of Teutoberg and Allia. Mockery and Outcome Although none of the Roman sources could have seen how Crassus died and how his body was treated after death, a rich set of myths are written about that. One myth said the Parthians poured molten gold into his mouth, to show the futility of greed. Others say the generals body remained unburied, cast among the undistinguished heaps of corpses to be torn apart by birds and beasts. Plutarch reported that the winning general, the Parthian Surena, sent Crassus body to the Parthian King Hyrodes. At a wedding party of Hyrodes son, Crassuss head was used as a prop in a performance of Euripides The Bacchae. Over time, the myth grew and was elaborated, and the upshot of the gory details was the death of any possibility of diplomatic reconciliation with Parthia for the next two centuries. The Triumvirate of Crassus, Caesar, and Pompey was dissolved, and without Crassus, Caesar and Pompey met in battle at the Battle of Pharsalus after crossing the Rubicon. As Plutarch says: before he went upon his Parthian expedition, [Crassus] found his possessions to amount to seven thousand one hundred talents; most of which, if we may scandal him with a truth, he got by fire and rapine, making his advantages of the public calamities. He died in pursuit of wealth from Asia. Sources: Braund, David. Dionysiac Tragedy in Plutarch, Crassus. The Classical Quarterly 43.2 (1993): 468ââ¬â74. Print. Rawson, Elizabeth. Crassorum . Why Microsoft Is Not A Monopoly Essays - Microsoft, Monopoly
Why Microsoft Is Not A Monopoly Monopoly? Is Microsoft actually a monopoly? No, they are not. They dont force you to buy their products, they are not the only company out there, and even though they are the most used, people do have many other choices. Who makes you buy a product? No company makes you buy their products. If any company made you buy a product of theirs it would be bad business, and no one would buy from them. Nobody is holding a gun to your head saying , Buy my product or I will blow your head off. If anyone did do that they would be put in jail. If you buy from another company, your computer will not explode; in fact the only company that does make you buy their products is Compaq, and even then the computer wont explode it just will not work. A lot of people think that they have to upgrade to a different product or their computer will not work. That is misleading. If an upgrade is mandatory it will be free. Any upgrade you have to buy is just a preference that is not needed. There are many other companies that do force people to buy their products. Other companies that do force you to buy their products arent widely used in a home situation. The reason they arent used at home very much is because nobody likes to be pressured into something. Many companies make products that are compatible with Microsoft or another companys products. The reason people dont think there are any other companies is because they hear about a product and are too lazy to look for an alternative. Microsoft does want to make a lot of money for themselves. Who doesnt? Windows is very easy to learn. Operating systems used to be very hard to learn. When Microsoft came out with the Windows operating system it was very easy to use. The reason I am pointing this out is because people dont want to make their lives harder than it needs to be. Microsoft makes the easiest operating system to use on a PC, and that is what makes it popular. It is not because they buy out other companies or because they make you use their products. Microsoft is not a monopoly; the problem is that most people are just too lazy to look for another company. If people actually tried to find other products it wouldnt take them very long at all. So, anyone who claims Microsoft is a monopoly needs to take a look at the facts. If everyone looked at the facts with knowledge about their products, they would see that they are free to choose. Having people that have little or no knowledge about computers and computer products, besides turning them on or installing something, is like putting a child the age of five on a jury. Its not fair to Microsoft especially, but it is also unfair to the people because if you hurt the company, it hurts the customers. Computers and Internet
